- Guitar Quiet-loud as an architecture rather than a dynamic: a clean, thin verse on the neck pickup and a full-gain chorus, with nothing bridging them. The Pixies made it a form and everyone took it.
- Bass Carrying the verse alone, which is what makes the chorus land. In this branch the bass is a lead instrument roughly half the time.
- Drums Hit hard, recorded roomy, and holding back deliberately in the verses. The restraint is the arrangement.
- Vocals Frequently untrained and mixed level with the guitars rather than above them — the opposite of the polished lead vocal that mainstream rock had settled into by 1985.

That 'alternative' ever described a sound. It described a distribution channel — college radio, independent labels, the racks a major-label record did not reach — and by 1994 it described a format on commercial radio, which is the exact opposite of what the word claims. The music filed under it ranges from Sonic Youth to Radiohead, and the only property they reliably share is having arrived from outside.

History
The term described music played on American college radio in the 1980s, outside the commercial system. In September 1991 Nevermind entered the charts and 'alternative' became overnight the most commercial word in the industry — a contradiction the genre never resolved.
