Avant-garde metal
Sung and screamed. Clean singing and harsh vocals trade off, often chorus against verse.
In short
Metal that imports anything — jazz, cabaret, electronics — and refuses to settle into a shape.
How it sounds
- Borrowings from jazz, cabaret, electronics, classical music or folklore, with no hierarchy.
- Unpredictable structures with abrupt stylistic shifts inside a single song.
- Vocals used across many registers, including operatic, spoken and distorted.
Hear what that means
- Metal as one colour among many from 6:43
Arcturus - La Masquerade Infernale
Riffing dropped without warning for a waltz, a spoken passage or silence. The guitar is not the centre of the arrangement.
Open on YouTube at 6:43 - Every vocal at once
Growled, crooned, operatic and spoken within one piece, chosen per section rather than per band.
Open on YouTube - Songs, then strangeness from 7:01
Ved Buens Ende - Written in Waters
Dissonant clean guitar, spoken vocals and black metal underneath. Memorable material arranged in ways nobody expected - the opposite of complexity substituting for writing.

The specifics
- Tempo
- 60-200 bpm
- Song length
- 4-10 min
- Tuning
- Anything, changing within a song. The refusal to settle on an instrumentation, a tuning or a tempo is the genre's organising principle.
- Production
- Dense, detailed and frequently strange, with instruments arriving from outside metal entirely — strings, woodwind, samples, tape. These records reward headphones and repay repeated listening.
- Written about
- Absurdity, Mysticism, Identity and dissolution, Whatever the record decides it is about
What each part is doing
- Guitar Metal riffing used as one colour among many, dropped without warning for jazz chords, a waltz or silence. It is not the centre of the arrangement.
- Vocals Every technique at once — growled, crooned, operatic, spoken, whispered — chosen per section. Avant-garde metal is where metal singing becomes a full palette.
- Keyboards and strings Used compositionally rather than for atmosphere, frequently carrying the main material while the guitars accompany.
- Rhythm section Playing jazz, waltz, blast beats and free time within one piece, which is a far harder demand than any single one of those.
What it isn't
That it is difficulty for its own sake. The best of it is unusually song-focused: Arcturus and Ved Buens Ende wrote memorable material and then arranged it in ways nobody expected, which is the opposite of complexity as a substitute for writing. The genre's failures are records where the strangeness is all there is, and those are easy to tell apart from the ones that lasted.
Told apart from
- Progressive metal Progressive metal is difficult inside metal's rules. Avant-garde metal treats the rules as the material and dismantles them.
- Technical thrash Technical thrash is still recognisably thrash however strange the chords. This is frequently not recognisably metal at all for minutes at a time.
- Art rock The same instinct on the rock branch, thirty years earlier — strangeness hidden inside apparently normal songs.
- Symphonic black metal Both use orchestration and theatre. Symphonic black metal keeps black metal's form; avant-garde metal keeps nothing.
The genres this one is most often mistaken for. Written, not derived.
History
Once the Norwegian scene stabilised, several musicians from it — Arcturus, Ved Buens Ende, Solefald — began adding elements that had no business being there. In parallel, Mr. Bungle in California and Sigh in Japan were doing something similar. It is a category defined by the refusal of categories.
