Shouted. Barked or chanted, and you can still make out the words.

In short

The original epicentre: technical riffing, clearer production and a little more melody.

How it sounds

  • Technical riffing and elaborate structures with many sectional changes.
  • Clearer production than the German variant, with audible bass.
  • Barked vocals that turn melodic in places, with singalong choruses.

Hear what that means

  • The scene's founding record

    Exodus - Bonded by Blood

Written by musicians who taught, replaced and recruited each other across half the bands in the East Bay. Thrash's technical standard is set here as much as anywhere.

  • Ambition arriving from 16:11

    Metallica - Ride the Lightning

An acoustic introduction, a long instrumental build and a harmonised solo on a thrash record in 1984. This is the moment the genre acquires dynamics.

  • Twin harmonies on a thrash band

    Testament - The Legacy

NWOBHM's harmonised leads played at Bay Area tempo. The melodic streak in thrash almost always traces back to this scene.

The specifics

Tempo
180-240 bpm
Song length
4-7 min
Tuning
E flat standard, following Metallica's example, on records made by musicians who mostly knew each other and shared rehearsal space.
Production
Bright, dry and increasingly ambitious as the scene developed. The early records are cheap and fast; by 1986 these are among the best-produced metal albums anyone had made.
Written about
Nuclear war, Corruption, Violence, frequently comic, The scene itself

What each part is doing

  • Guitar Downpicked palm-muted riffs with far more melodic and harmonic ambition than the Californian tag suggests — the Bay Area records are where thrash acquires twin harmonies and long instrumental sections.
  • Bass Audible and busy, especially where the players came from a NWOBHM listening background rather than a hardcore one.
  • Drums Skank beats and fast double kick, with the fills becoming genuinely elaborate as the scene's technical standard rose.
  • Vocals Barked and intelligible, and on several of these records recognisably still trying to sing.

What it isn't

That it means Metallica. The scene is a dozen bands sharing venues, members and rehearsal rooms in the East Bay between 1982 and 1987, and its influence runs at least as much through Exodus and Testament — whose guitarists taught, replaced and recruited each other — as through the band that left for a major label. Treating a scene as one act's origin story is a habit this encyclopedia tries not to have.

Told apart from

  • Thrash metal Bay Area thrash is the parent genre's founding regional scene rather than a departure from it. Where thrash has a technical or melodic streak, it usually comes from here.
  • Teutonic thrash The German scene is filthier, faster and less interested in melody or production. The two waves developed in parallel and sound obviously different.
  • Technical thrash Technical thrash is where the Bay Area's ambition ends up: shifting metres, jazz harmony and structures that stop being verse-chorus.
  • Crossover thrash Crossover came from the same clubs and the same bills, and kept hardcore's brevity. The tell is song length.

The genres this one is most often mistaken for. Written, not derived.

History

Metallica moved from Los Angeles to San Francisco in 1983 because that is where the audience was. A full scene formed around the club Ruthie's Inn: Exodus, Testament, Death Angel, Possessed. Kirk Hammett left Exodus for Metallica, and Exodus still made one of the genre's best albums.
