In short

The German version: simple heavy riffs, danceable synths, declaimed German vocals and a great deal of pyrotechnics.

How it sounds

  • A simple, heavy riff played in unison with the synthesizer.
  • Mid, danceable tempos with four-to-the-floor drumming.
  • Declaimed German vocals, with the rolled R as a trademark.

Hear what that means

  • German as a percussion instrument

    Rammstein - Sehnsucht

Rolled consonants and hard stops used rhythmically against a machine's four-four. The English re-recordings lose most of this, which is the evidence.

    Rammstein - Mutter

Programmed drums playing a straight four-four with orchestral synthesisers over it - physical and processional where American industrial metal is jagged.

    Oomph! - Wunschkind

The band who established the template, sung in German over sequenced guitars, three years before the genre had an audience outside Germany.

The specifics

Tempo
100-130 bpm
Song length
3.5-5 min
Tuning
Drop D, with the guitars gated and sequenced so tightly they behave like a sampler rather than an instrument.
Production
Enormous, exact and theatrical, with orchestral synthesisers alongside the machines. This is industrial metal made with a pop budget and pop discipline.
Written about
Desire and transgression, German history and language, Ritual, Fire, literally

What each part is doing

  • Guitar Simple, heavy riffs locked to the sequencer, using very few notes and a great deal of repetition — the rhythm is the content.
  • Synthesiser Carrying melody and orchestral weight, frequently doing what a string section would, and mixed level with the guitars.
  • Drums Programmed or heavily gated, playing a four-four march. The regularity is the point and it is what gives the genre its physical, marching quality.
  • Vocals Sung in German with rolled consonants and a very low baritone, delivered theatrically. The language is the genre's defining choice rather than an accident of origin.

What it isn't

That the German is a gimmick. Singing in German is the reason the genre sounds as it does: the language's consonants and stress patterns fit a machine's four-four in a way English does not, and the rolled r and hard stops are used percussively. Rammstein's English-language re-recordings are the evidence — the same songs lose most of their rhythmic character.

Told apart from

  • Industrial metal NDH is the German wing: slower, more melodic, sung rather than shouted, with a marching four-four where American industrial metal is jagged.
  • Nu metal Both are groove-first with samples and enormous choruses. Nu metal's groove is hip-hop's; this one's is a march.
  • Gothic rock Shares the theatricality and the baritone. NDH is far heavier, machine-driven and much less romantic.
  • Symphonic metal Both use orchestral keyboards for scale. Symphonic metal is soprano-led and grand; this is baritone-led and blunt.

The genres this one is most often mistaken for. Written, not derived.

History

Rammstein appeared in 1994 out of eastern Germany, with a combination of industrial, techno and metal plus a pyrotechnic show without equal. The term 'Neue Deutsche Härte' covers the whole German wave that followed. They are the best-selling German-language band in history, despite barely singing in English.
