Growled or shrieked. Unintelligible without a lyric sheet. The thing most newcomers bounce off.

In short

Reduces brutal death metal to slow, lurching riffs made purely for moving your head.

How it sounds

  • Slow, lurching riffs built on one repeated rhythmic figure.
  • Extremely low tunings (A or G) with a thick, matte tone.
  • Deep guttural vocals, often heavily processed, with plain drumming underneath.

The specifics

Tempo
80-160 bpm
Song length
2.5-4 min
Tuning
A or lower on seven- and eight-strings, slack enough that the low notes are felt rather than pitched.
Production
Enormously compressed with triggered kicks, mixed so the half-time sections hit as hard as physically possible on a club system. The production has one goal.
Written about
Body horror, Violence, Deliberate transgression, Nothing much, frankly

What each part is doing

  • Guitar The slam itself: a syncopated, palm-muted half-time riff with pinch harmonics, arriving after a fast section and designed to land like a dropped weight.
  • Bass Doubling the slam exactly, because the whole effect depends on guitar and bass hitting as one mass.
  • Drums Blast beats in the fast sections and precisely placed accents in the slams, with the kick locking to the guitar's syncopation note for note.
  • Vocals The lowest gutturals in metal, inhaled or heavily processed, functioning as percussion.

What it isn't

That it has no musical content. The content is rhythmic placement: a slam works or fails on where the accents fall against a kick pattern the drummer has deliberately left gaps in, and the difference between a good one and a bad one is audible instantly to anyone who listens to the genre. It is a narrow art and it is an art.

Told apart from

  • Brutal death metal Slam is the wing of brutal death metal built entirely around the half-time riff. Brutal death metal proper is faster and more varied.
  • Deathcore Deathcore's breakdown does the same job and arrives from hardcore. Slam arrives from death metal and has no clean vocals or hardcore lineage.
  • Beatdown / metallic hardcore Beatdown is the hardcore genre built on the same principle, at similar tempos, with shouted rather than guttural vocals.
  • Goregrind Shares the vocal approach and the subject matter, and is far faster and shorter.

The genres this one is most often mistaken for. Written, not derived.

History

Internal Bleeding, in New York, codified the idea in the mid-1990s of reducing death metal to the parts that make an audience move. Devourment pushed it to its extreme in Texas. The genre is regularly mocked for its simplicity and completely indifferent to the mockery.
