The scene
At the Gates, In Flames and Dark Tranquillity each worked out that death metal's speed and vocals could carry NWOBHM's melody, and a shared studio made the result sound like a single scene. Slaughter of the Soul in 1995 became the most copied metal record of its decade — largely in America, by bands who took the guitar harmonies and left the rest, which is how metalcore happened.
